THE APPLEWORKS USERS GROUP
C/O JIM WILLIS
1300 HINTON ST.
WEST MONROE LA. 71291
Dear Jim:
MThis set of NETRO.NOTES.85C again has some thoughts on membership. It would N
Lseem we all could profit with a more diversified group. I sent a letter to O
Mmy local Computer Store inviting them to make TAWUG information available to D
Btheir AppleWorks users. A copy of that letter is on this disk as P
NTAWUG.COMPSTORE and some of our members may want to perform a similar service I
Gin their area. Wouldn't it be great to have TAWUG's in numerous local M
Kcommunities? It would seem this might be a way to get you personally "off M
Kthe hook" for all of the work. One or more of these groups could decide to 4
help perform many functions of distribution, etc.
IBelieve it or not I ran most of this file through MegaWorks for spelling ;
check. Hopefully many of my typical "bugs" were swatted.
GIncidently, the SIDER hardisks which George Falk discussed are on sale L
Jthrough December at $595 for 10 Megabytes and $895 for the 20 MB versions N
L(add $15.00 for S&H). They tell me it goes into slot 7 of a IIe, can allow K
Iyou to use both 5.25" disk drives, and is compatible simultaneously with D
BProDos, Dos 3.3, Apple Pascal, and CP/M. ProFile from Apple only N
Laccommodates ProDos. For More info call 1-800-538-1307 and speak with First P
NClass Peripherals the manufacturer. They also have a 15 day trial period, a M
Kfull one year limited warrenty, and use the above number as a technical or M
Kservice hotline. BAD NEWS -- it is tough to get through on the line so be
patient.

Use Spreadsheet (SS) for Many WordProcessor (WP) and/or&
Data Base (DB) Applications.
AIf we think of files without "number crunching" or "name/address P
Ncombinations" we too often start with the WP and may easily become frustrated O
Mwith column limitations and/or the ease of placing material in a format with P
Nthe ability to alphabetize, etc. Try to outline in several columns using the P
NWordProcessor -- it is nightmarish to say the least! Many of the limitations O
Mof both WP & DB are resolved by the Spreadsheet. Flexibility, printing page Q
Owidth, and manipulations of copy segments are very easily handled in SS mode. J
HAlso by using the SS in "word" applications it makes using it for other L
Jpurposes less threatening. Once you try it the SS becomes invaluable for I
Gmany purposes. In fact it will give you the ability to do many things @
seemingly impossible or impractical with the conventional WP.
HAs an example see the file "SAMPLE.MENUS" which is a menu flyer sent to N
Lprospects of our Catering business. It is completely a SS output and could O
Mnot be done on the WP! The 144 columns in a CI=17 format makes a very great
difference.
JIn using a spreadsheet for WP applications there are limitations as "free L
Jlunches" are still hard to come by. Typing ease experienced with a WP is O
Mlacking. You must prefigure column widths carefully as although they can be N
Lchanged, when you do all kinds of crazy things happen to existing material. O
MAs in any new effort, if this is your case, it will take some practice and a .
few "four letter" words to feel proficient. F

Memory Expansion (RAM)
KAds and articles abound on this topic for AIIe and to a certain extent IIc N
Lowners.
Dec 85 article by Charles Rubin "Memory expansion is the wave 3
of the future" is excellent and reviewed herein.
HFirst, Rubin an AppleWorks expert and author of
The Endless Apple
and P
AppleWorks
both from Microsoft Press and a contributor to several computing O
Mmagazines is a very reputable source. He recently won a speed contest where O
Mhe used AppleWorks and another expert used Lotus 1-2-3. Second, he includes I
Ga matrix of costs and parameters for 16 RAMCARDS (Random Access Memory G
Eexpansion cards) including Manufacturer, RAM Size, operating systems <
supported, and most important
the effects on AppleWorks.
Yes the 55K Desktop limitation for serious Spreadsheet users and snail N
paced switches during integration, etc. are no longer necessary handicaps. O
MWhy not be able to work with 12-40K files on the DeskTop instead of 1-40K or M
Kmaybe 10-12 4K files? Also the speed factor is enhanced. RAMdisks can be H
Fcreated so that AppleWorks will completely reside in RAM avoiding the M
Kfrustrating delays during program overlay swaps, etc. The swaps are still O
Mmade but at "lightning" speeds. When a greater number of Apple owners have L
Jlarger RAM, the software developers will inevitably produce more powerful M
Kproducts including enhanced AppleWorks. Apple has recognized the need for M
Kboth increased RAM and storage with new products (See "Apple's Bevy of New
Products" in
Nov 85 A+.) >

Book Review of APPLEWORKS with Advanced Applications by
Kenneth Close, 1985
LThis new offering by Wm C. Brown Publishers, Dubuque, Iowa has 280 pages of N
LTutorial and Applications plus a Graphics Simulator. For $13.95 (book) and N
Labout $25.00 (book and disk featuring the Simulator) . If you purchase the N
Lbook and later want the disk, it is available from the Publisher for $11.00 N
L(plus $1.25 shipping and handling if you use a charge card, they absorb S&H K
Iwith a check or money order). For those who want the Graphics Simulator L
Jwithout spending up to $12.25, Appendix B of the book contains a complete E
Clisting of the AppleSoft Program to compile it yourself along with N
Linstructions for entry and use.
WARNING!
It will take many hours unless M
Kyou are an experienced BASIC programmer. On the other hand the experience O
Mmay be valuable in and of itself. A bonus in buying the disk is it contains O
Mdata for and solutions to Tutorial applications in the book. I'm buying the L
Jdisk!
Dealer's choice.
If your bookstore doesn't have this book and/or
disk, write to:

LWhy bother at all? While these comments are based on a limited look at the I
Gmaterial it is the most
advanced
AppleWorks book I've seen but it is P
Nwritten in a style that new users can easily follow. If one wants to do some O
Mgraphing from their AW database or spreadsheet files they can buy GraphWorks P
N(already critiqued on TAWUG disks with DON'T BUY recommendations from several I
Gmembers who really understand graphing especially Roger Vancil). This P
Noffering with Graphics Simulator on disk allows some graphing of your files. P
NThe book has several chapters on the topic including one on "graphing itself" P
Nand another on how to use the simulator. While the Simulator is not directly P
Nconnected to AppleWorks, it is menu driven and will work with AppleWorks data N
Lconverted to DIF or Text files. Also you can use it with data inputs from L
Jthe keyboard. I see it as at least an interim solution for "AW poorfolk" M
Ki.e. those who are living with a super piece of software which is short of N
Lthe IBM-AT capabilities with LOTUS 1-2-3 at al. Roger Vancil will probably P
Nbut not necessarily find it lacking for his research needs but for we who can K
Iwork with smaller sets of numbers it looks like a good start. Those who H
F"shell out" now and work with this material should be in an excellent P
Nposition to rapidly be very proficient when an AppleWorks Graphing package is M
Krecommended. Remember the disk also contains a great deal of data to ease 1
the workload in learning from the book itself.
The Publisher claims "The aim of
AppleWorks with Advanced Applications
Nis to swiftly bring you to a level of understanding of the AppleWorks program K
Iwhere you can maximize its most sophisticated uses and go beyond them to M
Kgraphing." My view it has this potential assuming a reasonable ammount of
involvement.
Minimum hardware requirements: AIIc or AIIe with 64K and one disk drive.
JFor those who want to wait and see I'll report after using the disk. For /
those who don't wait let us hear your views! F
